Classes and Educational Programs

New Tampa Performing Arts Center is where the arts can be enjoyed, celebrated, and taught through educational programs and classes. Led by experienced instructors, the programming spans a wide range of styles and disciplines and is designed for all skill levels.

Enrollment is open for spring sessions I and II. Session I runs March 3-April 12. Session II runs April 21-May 31.

All refund requests for classes and camps must be received in writing prior to the start of each session. No refunds will be issued once the session has begun. All classes, dates, days, and times are subject to change without notice.

Drama & Acting Classes

Acting Boot Camp
Has your child ever dreamed of pursuing an acting career? Acting Boot Camp is a fast-paced class with inside information on acting techniques and performance skills designed to jumpstart a career on the stage or screen.

Tuesdays at 6 PM: Ages 10-17
Saturdays at 11 AM: Ages 7-13
Duration: 45 minutes

Becoming the Character
Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances. Through the process of character analysis and creation, students will embark on a journey to mold unique, believable characters through improv, movement, vocal characterization, and much more.

Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 PM: Ages 18+

To Tech or Not to Tech
Technical theater is the invisible craft that brings stories to life. For every on-screen or on-stage performer the audience sees, there are handfuls of people behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothy. This interactive technical theater class will take students behind the curtain to learn about lights, sound, stage management, sets, costumes, and stage makeup.

Acting C.S.I.
Acting C.S.I. is a fun, investigative way to break down a scene and perform creatively! Students step into different characters while exploring the fundamentals of storytelling through cold readings, scene study, and improvisation. The class starts out with fun acting games where students get to know each other better. Then students are taught an investigative approach to performing a scene.

Mini Acting
And the Oscar goes to…YOU! This class is an introduction to acting. Your child will tap into their inner star and learn acting basics through creative play and fun, engaging activities.

The Play’s the Thing
A solo actor can only be great if they work well in an ensemble. Through ensemble work and team building, students will create, produce, and perform original work using rudimentary materials, inventive stagecraft, and the imagination.

Scene & Performance Workshop
If you judge a character, you can’t play it. Explore stage performance techniques that will help communicate a character’s action and intentions in a believable way.

Wing It Improv
In improvisation, there are no mistakes! In this class that’s all about improv acting, students will wing it and be silly. They’ll learn the basics of improv technique and skills that foster creativity, confidence, and active listening.

Dance & Movement Classes

Broadway Bound
Pave the path to Broadway! This class combines elements of jazz, ballet, and musical theatre, allowing dancers to explore energetic and expressive movement while developing performance skills. Students learn to tell a story through dance, much like they would in a theatrical performance, often incorporating character-driven movements and musicality.

Broadway Stars
There’s no business like show business! Perfect for that rising sensation in the family that loves to sing and dance, this entry-level, play-based class will get that young star on the way into the spotlight through simple dance routines.

Dance FUNdamentals
Dance as if no one is watching! The first steps to a new student’s dance journey start with proper technique. Students will learn rudimentary dance technique, barre work, and much more.

Creative Movement
It’s time to boogie and shake! During this exciting class, students will learn listening skills, coordination, and self-discipline through unique, creative movement-based games.

Ballet Beginnings
See the music. Hear the dance. Students will master the fundamentals of classical ballet, from graceful alignment to refined technique and vocabulary. Whether perfecting pirouettes or discovering the art of movement, this class brings the elegance and excitement of ballet to life.

Beginner Jazz
5,6,7,8! Get ready to dance! Learn fun, fast-paced jazz steps to upbeat music. This class combines techniques from ballet, modern dance, and other current forms of popular dances. Comfortable, form-fitting clothing is encouraged to allow freedom of movement. Jazz shoes are optional.  

Thursdays at 5 PM: Ages 10-14

Stretch and Refresh
Unwind and recharge with this simple stretching class designed for parents and community members of all fitness levels. Enjoy a relaxing session focused on gentle stretches and mindful movement to help relieve tension and promote well-being.

Exploring Movement Mindfully
This class will explore movement through a more holistic approach while focusing on breathing, moving mindfully, and becoming more aware of the body-mind connection. Students will perform floorwork, standing movement exploration, and group discussion to share observations and discoveries. Comfortable clothing is encouraged to allow freedom of movement.

Music Classes

Music Rocks
Are you ready to rock?! Students will taste the rockstar life. This hands-on music class gets energy pumping through percussion playing, music production, beginner music theory, and much more.

Wednesdays at 4 PM: Ages 10-17

Together In Song
The only thing better than singing is more singing. In Together in Song, students will find their vocal home, blend voices in harmony, and learn the magic of choral singing—without the fear of a surprise solo. No experience needed, just a love of music and a willingness to make joyful noise (on purpose)!

  • Darrin Person

    DRAMA & ACTING FACULTY

    Darrin Person is an actor, filmmaker, podcaster, cinema scholar, and historian with a Master of Fine Arts in theatre from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a bachelor’s degree in film studies from the University of Kansas. Person conducted his residency with The Missouri Rep and The Coterie Theatre in Kansas City. He appeared in a production of Whose Life is It Anyway? at Kansas City’s American Heartland Theater.

    He also appeared in productions of A Soldier’s Play, Picnic, and Mary Stuart. He taught theatre for the NYC Department of Education for 11 years and was a contributing member of the NYC/DOE’s Office of Arts and Special Projects, a department that was instrumental in establishing the Arts Based Standards and Assessments for the New York City school system.

    Person was co-founder of The Brooklyn Summer Shakespeare-ience, a high school summer arts program that was awarded a proclamation from former Brooklyn Borough President and present NYC mayor Eric Adams. He learned cinematography at NYU and has taught urban filmmaking at The New School, theatre history at the John Jay College for Criminal Justice, and acting at the Harlem School of the Arts.

  • Kathy Norman

    DRAMA & ACTING FACULTY

    Kathy Norman is a Florida State University acting graduate who has had an extensive career in film, television, and theatre. Beginning her professional career at FSU Repertory Theatre, she moved into television directing on the Home Shopping Network, in addition to becoming a speaking model for several product lines.

    She then moved back to live performance in the Busch Gardens Comedy troupe. Other work of note includes entertainment staff on MV Costa Classica luxury cruise ship, dancer on a Dick Clark Productions TV special, performer on Animal Planet training videos, and an appearance in Dolphin Tale 2. Norman is now at New Tampa Performing Arts Center as acting instructor, house manager, and volunteer program leader.

  • David Estevez

    EDUCATION & FAMILY PROGRAMMING COORDINATOR
    MUSIC FACULTY

    David Estevez, originally from South Florida, is a first-generation American of Cuban descent. He is a graduate of New World School of the Arts and an accomplished pianist, accompanist, and musical director. David served as the education director for the highly successful Miami Children’s Theatre educational program. Most recently, he has been a musical supervisor for Norwegian Cruise Lines, overseeing new productions around the world through their final rehearsal period to opening on cruise ships. His work in theatre, film, and cruise line entertainment has exposed him to the inner workings of the ever-changing music and theatre landscape.

  • Marion Kampert

    DANCE & MOVEMENT FACULTY

    Marion Kampert holds an Associate of Arts in dance from Hillsborough Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and behavior analysis from the University of South Florida. She is originally from Ecuador where her dance journey began at the Conservatorio Raymond Mauge Thoniel in Guayaquil. After migrating with her mom to the United States, she continued to explore dance studies at Howard W. Blake High School. Her passion for dance deepened while training with Christina Acosta at Hillsborough Community College. She then joined Moving Current Dance Collective in 2008, where she had the opportunity to perform works by Cindy Hennessy, Erin Cardinal, Dione and Andy Noble, and Bill Doolin. In 2009, Marion performed in The Agreeable Husband, a show produced by All Out Rep under the direction of Shana Dunhue and Amie Salle. In 2011, Marion joined REVolutions Dance, where she learned about inclusive dance and traveled to Russia and China teaching inclusive dance workshops and performing repertoire. Marion continued her growth as a dance educator and practitioner from her years directing a K-8 dance program at Rochelle School of the Arts in Lakeland, where she produced shows, created curriculum, and collaborated with different fine art disciplines.

  • Carissa Smith

    DANCE & MOVEMENT FACULTY

    Trained at America’s Ballet School, Carissa learned Cuban-Vaganova-style ballet and modern dance. She now dances professionally with Tampa City Ballet and takes part in performing classical ballets, including the lead role of "Alice" in Alice in Wonderland performed at NTPAC, and takes part in numerous experimental contemporary works. She teaches ballet and contemporary dance to all ages because she believes everyone can dance.
