New Tampa Unplugged: The Women of Jazz
New Tampa Unplugged is a spin on the hit show, MTV Unplugged, which aired in the 1990s and early 2000s and featured popular artists of the time performing acoustic sets. The series presents acoustic performances by notable Tampa Bay musicians, and the theater is transformed into a unique, living-room-style venue with candlelit cabaret seating.
This special Unplugged performance features The Women of Jazz. The program includes instrumental and vocal jazz, showcasing songs written or made famous by women. This concert has been delivered to sell-out crowds over the past several seasons at the Palladium, The Suncoast Jazz Classic, The Villages and Swan City Jazz Festival.
The Women of Jazz concert series was the brainchild of saxophonist and vocalist Valerie Gillespie. Gillespie is a longtime regular in the Florida jazz scene. She has played with some of the greats in the industry, as well as being a regular with The Florida Orchestra and several other local and national acts. Gillespie is joined for this concert by some of the area’s finest women of jazz.
On piano is Judi Glover who has toured extensively throughout the state. She demonstrates her skills and versatility in styles of jazz from ragtime to contemporary.
Jenifer Media is an award-winning bass player whose talents are shared over multiple genres including blues, reggae, jazz, rock, and more.
Rounding out this talented quartet is Patricia Dean on the drum set. Dean has been part of the jazz scene in Florida for many years. Not only will you marvel at her ability to set a laid-back groove on the drums, but her vocals will have you mesmerized.
